Description

The Journey of Silk

School excursion packages based on silk production give students a hands-on opportunity to discover how a natural fibre moves from silkworm and cocoon to thread, fabric, and finished products.

Theme: From Cocoon to Cloth – Understanding Sericulture

Learning Objectives
This educational experience introduces students to the fascinating process of silk production, from the lifecycle of silkworms to the weaving of silk fabric. Students will develop a deeper appreciation for natural fibers, sustainable practices, and the skill and care involved in traditional textile making.

Activities

▪ Introduction to Silkworms & Lifecycle Observation
Learn about the stages of a silkworm’s life – from egg to larva, cocoon, and moth. See live silkworms and understand their environment, diet (especially mulberry leaves), and growth cycle.

▪ Silk Extraction from Cocoons
Watch how silk threads are carefully unraveled from cocoons using traditional and modern methods. Learn how heat and water help loosen the fibers, and how the long filaments are collected.

▪ Reeling, Dyeing & Weaving Demonstration
Observe how the silk threads are reeled, dyed, and woven into fabric. Understand traditional techniques and tools used by artisans to create soft, lustrous silk cloth.

▪ Hands-on Interaction with Silk Fabric & Tools
Feel raw silk, spun silk, and finished products. Try simple reeling or weaving techniques (if permitted). Learn about the role of craftsmanship in adding value to natural materials.

▪ Cultural Significance & Sustainability Discussion
Understand how silk is not just a fabric, but a symbol of heritage, sustainability, and eco-friendly fashion. Discussions may also include ethical sericulture and innovations in the field.

Optional Add-ons

  • Visit to a silk weaving cooperative

  • Craft workshop using silk thread or cloth

  • Storytelling on silk in Indian history and tradition

Outcome
Students gain hands-on understanding of sericulture and its connection to nature, rural livelihoods, and eco-conscious production. The tour inspires creativity, respect for tradition, and awareness of sustainable resources.
